The rules
One or both players may opt to replace one of their pawns with a new piece called Henry (or Henrietta) the Tippler. This piece can replace the pawn on either the leftmost or rightmost side of the board. (The white player decides where to place their tippler first.) The Tippler can move in three directions: ↑↗→ if on the left side of the board, ↑↖← if on the right. The Tippler can move any number of spaces and is able to capture pieces. If the tippler reaches the opposite column of the board from which they started, they can no longer move horizontally. They can only move forward until they reach the final row, at which point they are promoted to Jester.
The Jester
If the Tippler reaches the final row, they are promoted to Jester. The Jester can teleport, i.e. move to any empty space on the board, but they cannot capture pieces or be captured.
Piece ideas
Any two distinctive objects may be used for the opposing colors of Tippler, such as two differently-colored coins, poker chips, or dice. Salt and pepper shakers make cute chess pieces, especially if they have a fun theme. Meeples from other games are good if available, or any cute figurine. You can use shot glasses (clear spirits for the white player, dark for the black player) but if you make a drinking game out of Henry the Tippler, it's recommended that you drink only when you promote or capture the Tippler, or after winning a game.
Optional Rule
The bouncer: Once a Tippler reaches the opposite edge of the board, they may "bounce off" and begin moving in the other direction again.
Addendum
The recommended way to signify a Tippler that's been promoted to Jester is with a colorful origami hat. You can find instructions for doing so here.
